Hi Will –
I’d be curious to read what my fellow Unwinders would have to say on the topic of gifts for staff over the holidays. Not whether or not to give at all, that’s a personal or organizational decision. But I do give gifts and frankly, I’m getting stumped for ideas. I started giving gift cards – Starbucks, Target, etc. but realized that wasn’t very ‘festive.’ I guess I bounce between getting something larger for the department as a whole and individual gifts for each. I’ve bought books for each staff member that were donated to our collection in their name. This isn’t as pricey as you’d expect since we get the Library’s discount on personal purchases. My folks really appreciated this give, but the challenge, though has proven to be finding an appropriate book for each person. That’s harder than it sounds, and finding a newer, collection-worthy book is even more difficult. I’ve tried baking and while my staff is wonderfully polite, I’ve discovered I’m not that strong of a baker. Last year, I stumbled across the world’s largest chocolate bar. This was popular, but we honestly needed a hammer and chisel to break pieces off. Plus, despite it being chocolate, it was too big and significantly overstayed its welcome.
I’ve started brainstorming ideas for this year and I realized that thousands of brains are better than one so I thought I’d write and see if you thought this would make for a good discussion.
